Patton College of Education joins national Future Ready initiative

PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville-Patton College of Education joined educators from across the country in making a commitment to focus on technology by signing the Future Ready pledge.

The pledge demonstrates the university’s commitment to work collaboratively with students, educators, families and members of the community to set a vision for digital learning, to empower educators through personalized professional development and to mentor other colleges of education in their own transition to digital learning.

Future Ready builds on the momentum of the national ConnectED Initiative and recognizes the importance of building human capacity within schools and districts for effectively using increased connectivity and new devices to transform teaching and learning.

“The Future Ready pledge aligns UPIKE uniquely with our forward-thinking P-12 partners who have already signed the pledge and are conducting self-studies about their own practices related to preparing students for the 21st century,” said David Barnett, Ed.D., founding dean of the Patton College of Education. “As the first university in the nation to sign the pledge, UPIKE helps pave the way for other forward-thinking post-secondary institutions to become involved in this national initative.”

“With our focus on rural education, we see the smart use of technology as an effective way to level the playing field with schools and classrooms that might be half a block from a museum or art gallery,” said Barnett. “For UPIKE, being Future Ready means teaching our aspiring educators to identify the resources they have available and then effectively using all of those resources to encourage student learning.”

The university’s Future Ready pledge was adapted from the U.S. Department of Education’s Future Ready pledge for K-12 school superintendents and reflects UPIKE’s commitment to expand opportunities to align the research-based P-12 and university initiatives. Future Ready is a collaboration between the Alliance for Excellent Education and the U.S. Department of Education.
