Pike man faces charges after alleged bicycle incident

IVEL – A Phyllis man was arrested after police say he attempted to steal a child’s bicycle and was later found intoxicated in Ivel this past week.

According to the Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville, an officer was sent to the Ivy Creek apartments in Ivel after reviewing a call complaining that a man was “trying to steal a child’s bicycle” at the apartment complex.

The caller specified the man, later discovered to be 51-year-old Gregory Adams, was allegedly trying to steal the bicycle near apartment number 14.

The arresting officer wrote in his report that once he arrived he found “a male subject wearing a gray shirt slumped over in a chair outside apartment 12.” The officer went on to say Adams had blood-shot eyes and slow, slurred speech, adding that the Phyllis resident had “urinated on himself.”

Adams allegedly failed a series of sobriety tests and was taken into custody, charged with a misdemeanor count of public intoxication of a controlled substance.

Tenants interviewed after Adams’ arrest gave statements that prior to the police arriving Adams had knocked on several of their doors and could be heard “yelling throughout the apartment complex parking lot.”

Adams will next appear for arraignment on the charge in Floyd District Court.
