PIKEVILLE – Pikeville police are currently investigating what appears to be a murder/suicide. Pikeville Public Safety Director Paul Maynard spoke at a press conference on Friday (March 18) and discussed how the murder was discovered.

“Last night, the Pikeville Police Department opened an investigation on Main Street at 143 in an apartment located there,” Maynard said during the press conference. “By initial investigation, it appears to be a murder/suicide situation.”

The victims were identified as Nicholas Hopkins, 36, of Florence, and Travis Thompson, 22, of Independence. Both victims appear to have died from gunshot wounds. It was not confirmed whether or not one of the victims was a student at the University of Pikeville.
