“It is a real treat to be a part of this program and see the children’s reaction and excitement when they receive their gifts. We have experienced in the past, many children would take their designated money and want to spend it on gifts for their siblings. Now we give each child selected for the program $100 and each of their siblings $50,” said Will Holbrook, Prestonsburg Police.

The program is an event children, families, and police officers look forward to each year. The day begins at the Mountain Arts Center, where children and their families are greeted and provided lunch. The children choose what officer they want to shop with. The officers meet the children and families at Walmart for the shopping trip.

Each child is give $100 to spend anyway they choose. Each of their siblings are given $50 to spend on a gift of their choice. In addition to the money children are gifted with new socks and shoes, typically three outfits, a winter coat and toboggan. In addition to the new duds, children also typically receive a blanket and pillow as well as two or three surprise gifts. The Prestonsburg Police Department also work with sponsors who buy each child a new bicycle. At the end of the event, each family is sent home with a food basket with all the fixings for a Christmas dinner.

Patton Insurance, Inc., Coverall of Eastern Kentucky, Sign Guys Graphics and Window Tinting, East Kentucky Gun and Pawn, Thomas Hereford Co. – Borders of Prestonsburg, Pop’s Chevrolet, Sparkling Car Wash and Detailing, D & D Lawn Care the and City of Prestonsburg.
