WYLAND – Floyd County is home to another state champion. Jeffrey Tyler Smith, of Wayland, the son of Jeff and Kathy Smith, won the Tri-State Golden Gloves tournament over the weekend.

On Friday, April 1 and Sunday, April 3, the Ashland National Guard Armory held the USA Boxing-sanctioned event. Fighters hailed from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.

Charlie Hanshaw, the event’s organizer, is a longtime supporter of Golden Gloves. Fighters compete for a chance to step inside the ring on a national level in Salt Lake City in May.

Martin trains hard and says he enjoys the physical contact of the sport. Stepping inside the Golden Gloves ring takes courage. A fighter must have his body in top physical condition to withstand the beating he will take win or lose in the ring.

“It’s all about the kids, giving them something to do and getting them off the streets,” said Handshaw.

Smith will advance to compete on the national stage in Salt Lake City in May.
