PRESTONSBURG – Individuals from Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin and Martin counties traveled to Jenny Wiley State Park on Friday to compete in the 31st Big Sandy Senior Games. The Games were held at the Dewey Dam area of Jenny Wiley State Park.
The Senior Games, which is comprised of bowling, billiards and outdoor games, is held the second and third Friday of May at the Dewey Dam Corps of Engineers Downstream Area. On Friday, individuals competed in the outdoor games, which consisted of corn hole, shuffle board, basketball toss, softball toss, archery, football toss, horseshoes and more. Hundreds of seniors from around the Big Sandy Region competed.
“Coming to cheer on my grandpa in the Senior Games was tons of fun,” said Kim Akers, of Dana. “He enjoyed himself and we enjoyed seeing him have such a great time.”
Adults ages 50-plus competed in the local Senior Games. Event organizers say some participants take the local games very serious and practice to win and go on to compete in the state level Senior Games. The main purpose is to get seniors exercising and staying active.
