Subway in McDowell is boarded up after a SUV crashed through the front of the restaurant on Friday afternoon.

McDOWELL – Diners got more than a sandwich and chips at the Subway in McDowell on Friday. According to Kentucky State Police Trooper, Jimmy Anderson, the driver of a black Kia Sorento, accidentally drove the SUV through the front of the restaurant.

One woman was hospitalized after being struck by the SUV as it entered the restaurant. She was taken to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of the SUV was attempting to secure a child in a restraint when she turned around and allegedly hit the accelerator rather than the break, causing the vehicle to jump forward and crash through the front of the building.

“I was shopping at the Dollar General, when I heard a loud crash,” said Sharon Newsome of Frasure Creek. “Everyone ran outside to see what happened and that’s when we saw the SUV had crashed through Subway. Some people were screaming. I thought someone was hurt bad. The ambulance, police and fire trucks all were on scene quickly and the parking lot was crowded with people just wanting to see what all the commotion was about.”

Subway Manager Rebecca Newsome was standing outside the restaurant when the accident occurred. No one else was injured in the accident.
