PRESTONSBURG – Relay for Life of Floyd County will hold its annual event at Big Sandy Community and Technical College on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer. It unites communities across the nation to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. With the support of thousands of volunteers, the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 500 lives a day.

Currently, 14 teams and 148 participants have registered to participate in Friday’s event. A total of $1722.16 has been raised for the fight against cancer by local companies and individuals participating in the Floyd County event.

The top team as of press time was the FBC We Believe for a Cure. As of Wednesday night, the leading team had raised a total of $1,275 with the help of local businesses, friends, and family.

Walmart 696 organized a bake sale and raised $247.16.

Individuals who have collected the most donations for the local event include Sue Wells, who brought in $750 by soliciting donations of $250 from Medicine Market Pharmacy and $500 from Worldwide Equipment.

Rebecca Campbell raised $250 by soliciting a donation from Appalachian Wireless.

Sally Porter raised $175 by soliciting donations from various friends and family.

Wells, Campbell and Porter have donated their time and effort to a cause they hold near and dear to their hearts.

“My mother died of Lung Cancer and it is a horrible thing to have to endure,” said Relay for Life of Floyd County participant Lisa Stapleton. “Participating in Relay for Life allows me to honor her struggle and courage and remember her fighting spirit.”

Anyone who would like to honor a friend or family member, but can’t participate in the walk, can light a luminaria in their honor. For more information, contact Josh Johnson at [email protected] or 606-789-6820.
