SPURLOCK – More layoffs are coming as Blackhawk Mining, with corporate offices located in Lexington, announced last week it intends to close the mining operation located at Spurlock in Floyd County.
More than 200 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the latest mine closing. Blackhawk Mining filed a WARN notice with the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training declaring the upcoming job losses.
Floyd County Judge-Executive Ben Hale also received a letter notifying his office of the layoffs at Spurlock. The layoffs are scheduled for Thursday.
The job loss is said to be permanent and will begin in August. Eventually, the company states the entire mine complex will be shut down.
