PAINTSVILLE – Detention center and jail authorities continue to fight to keep illegal contraband and drugs out of the hands of inmates. Although against the law and punishable by jail time, individuals still try to smuggle items. On Tuesday, the Prestonsburg Police Department’s canine unit assisted officials at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center during a search for drugs and illegal contraband.

The Big Sandy Regional Detention Center went on lockdown early Tuesday morning as officials searched the facility. No drugs or illegal contraband were discovered. Officials say routine searches such as the one conducted on Tuesday are necessary to keep inmates and staff safe at all times.
