PRESTONSBURG – Photographer Josh Lowe has brought his print collection to the Art Gallery of Big Sandy Community and Technical College. Lowe’s work appears in social media on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @the_lowe_life. He has over 3,500 followers and has frequent shares. His work is often featured on Kentucky Tourism, Kentucky for Kentucky and Shop Local Kentucky.
Lowe says he always loved photographs. “I remember looking at the photo albums my mom created when I was a child. Just prior to the birth of my own first child, I purchased my first DSLR camera. This was my way to capture the childhood moments I loved remembering through photographs. Shortly after I purchased my first iPhone, I discovered Instagram. In the beginning it was photos of the kids and daily life, but slowly I began to take photos of the occasional sunrise or sunset on my daily commute.”
A native of Prestonsburg, Lowe completed the general education requirements for his bachelor’s degree at Big Sandy Community and Technical College. He transferred to the University of Kentucky earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Business Administration Marketing and Management in 2001. After spending several years at Chase Bank in loan servicing, he became a financial analyst for a large defense contractor. He continues to work for this company as a senior project manager.
In June 2015, Lowe launched @the_lowe_life, first on Instagram where most of his work centers around landscapes, waterfalls and night photography. While most of his work centers on Kentucky, he is also recognized for his scenes of the ocean and the magnificent natural landmarks to the west.
“Why do I love photography? That’s is the simplest question with the most complex answer, but in short: because of the places it has taken me, and the friends I have made. It is something that I can do any time; but most importantly, it allows me to capture the moments in my life that I don’t want to forget.”
A reception for Lowe will be held on Thursday, October 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Art Gallery in the Magoffin Building located on the Prestonsburg campus. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. until noon.
