BETSY LAYNE – The Betsy Layne Fire Department received a call of a house fire at 2:27 p.m. on Thursday. Within minutes, firefighters were suited up and en route to the fire. The fire was located on the southbound lane going toward Prestonsburg, beside of Eastern Heights Hotel. When firefighters arrived at the residence of Clarence and Sandy Sheffield, flames had already engulfed the home.
“When we arrived on the scene, the mobile home was engulfed in flames and our first priority was to ensure the occupants of the home were outside and safe,” said Betsy Layne Fire Department Public Information Officer Brian White. “The older gentleman informed firefighters he was on oxygen and had oxygen tanks stored inside an outbuilding. We kept the building wet to prevent it from catching fire and creating a possible explosion.”
The occupants of the home, an elderly couple, lost everything in the fire. Nothing inside the mobile home was salvageable. No injuries were reported.
