PRESTONSBURG — Prestonsburg firefighters and police officers got an early start, Friday, responding to the scene of a burning outbuilding at Town Branch that ended with three arrests.

The fire began sometime around 8 a.m., in a storage building adjacent to Allie Anderson’s home at 1663 Trimble Branch Road. Prestonsburg Fire Chief Bobby Carpenter said that, when firefighters arrived on the scene, the family was still asleep inside their home, unaware of the blaze building outside.

The family was evacuated from their home, and the quick action of firefighters saved the mobile home from damage. The outbuilding and a wooden fence, however, were destroyed, and the flames brought down nearby power lines.

At the scene, Carpenter said he had not yet determined a cause of the fire. He said the family told him they had recently been cleaning out the building, but did not know of anything that could have started the fire. Meanwhile, a witness reported hearing an explosion shortly before seeing flames coming from the building.

“This one looks a little suspicious,” Carpenter said.

Those suspicions turned out to be well-founded, after police discovered several items believed to be used in the manufacture of methamphetamine inside and outside the home.

Prestonsburg Police Det. Adam Dixon said three people were arrested after the discovery, facing charges such as manufacturing meth and wanton endangerment. He did not identify the suspects, citing the pending investigation.

Dixon and Carpenter both now say the fire was likely caused by an active meth lab, although a final determination will be made at a later time.

No one was injured as a result of the fire. Two juveniles were inside the home at the time of the fire.
