PRESTONSBURG — Just days after being sworn in as an attorney, Zach Ousley was not one to stick in a toe to test the waters of his new career. Instead, he just plunged in.

Ousley, who graduated from the Appalachian School of Law earlier this year, learned he had passed the bar exam Sept. 27. On Oct. 2, he was in Frankfort, being sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Will T. Scott. And by Oct. 3, he was Floyd Family Court, representing clients.

“It’s been a really intereing week for me, to go from where I was Monday, to where I am today,” Ousley said Oct. 4.

Ousley has joined the law practice of Jennifer Burke Elliott as an associate. Prior to passing the bar, Ousley spent time working in the office of Pillersdorf, DeRossett and Lane, where his uncle, Gerald DeRossett, is a named partner. However, he said he jumped at the chance to work with Elliott.

“I came to this lady here because she is the best at what she does in several counties,” Ousley said. “I can’t think of anyone else I would rather have mentor me.”

For Elliott, the admiration is mutual.

“It’s few and far between to find someone his age with the maturity and the clarity to know what he wants and to go after it,” Elliott said.

Ousley says he looks forward to learning more about family law from Elliott, who he said is second-to-none in the field. On the other hand, Elliott said the addition of Ousley will help the firm branch into other areas, such as criminal law.
