Scouts collect basic items for holidays

MARTIN — While toys and electronic gadgets are usually on top of every child’s Santa list, one local Boy Scout troop helped make sure some children in need had the very basics covered.
Boy Scout Unit 839, from Martin, which includes Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, worked with community members and local churches to provide underwear for boys and girls staying at the Sandy Valley Abuse Center.
Trish Bentley started the underwear drive four years ago, while working at the center when she was in nursing school. She says each year is a unique experience in how the community comes together to help.
“This year we are able to help kids and also help Santa collect for 11 kids and two adults in time of need,” Bentley said. “We have collected from local churches, schools and fire departments, as well as other places such as Chicago, Ill., Orlando, Fla. and Greenville, Ind.”
Bentley said basic items can help make a world of difference for those in need.
“Clean clothing, a warm meal and a safe place to sleep are very important,” Bentley said.
The Scouts are continuing to accept donations of new clothing and used items. For more information or to help, call (606) 226-0700.
