THREE MILE CURVE — The Southern Mountains District Consortia team, made up of representatives from Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and career/technical centers from Logan, Boone, Lincoln, Mingo, McDowell, Raleigh, and Wyoming counties, held its meeting at Ralph R. Willis to discuss plans for the school year and WV Senate Bill No. 436 on Monday, September 30, 2013.

Jan Hanlon, Director of Secondary Curriculum for Logan County Schools, said the meeting was an excellent opportunity for the school.

“The students and staff went above and beyond to welcome the Consortia to Ralph R. Willis,” Hanlon said. “This school has a lot of great things happening in it, and I was very impressed with how everyone was able to work together to make this a success.”

Guests attending the event were given tours of the facility by students, including the center’s facilities for health occupations, automotive technology, air conditioning and refrigeration technology, industrial equipment maintenance, carpentry, electrical technology, graphic communications, welding technology, collision repair technology, and other departments.

Those in attendance were also presented a wonderful meal by members of the ProStart program. ProStart, instructed by Chris Smoot, prepares students in all aspects of the restaurant industry, including culinary foundations, management essentials, and food production.

“Mr. Smoot is in his first year as the instructor of ProStart, and he really made our program shine during this event,” Hanlon said.

Students were involved in all aspects of the event including preparing the meal and serving as the wait staff during the luncheon. Menus for the event were designed and printed by the school’s graphic communications department.

Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center is comprised of junior and senior students from Chapmanville Regional, Logan, and Man High Schools.
