A miner in Marshall County died Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2013, after an accident that resulted in a head injury, according to a report in the Charleston Daily Mail newspaper.
The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training said the accident happened at the CONSOL Energy McElroy Mine in Marshall County just before 1 p.m., the newspaper’s report said.
According to a preliminary report from the office, the miner suffered a head injury while underground and died on the way to the hospital, the report went on to say.
“It is a terrible tragedy when the dangers that can accompany mining result in the loss of life,” Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said in an emailed statement to the media Friday afternoon. “This miner and his family remain in the prayers and thoughts of Joanne and I, just as they surely do with all West Virginians.”
Inspectors from the WVOMHS&T are at the mine and have started their investigation.
It is West Virginia’s sixth mining-related accident of 2013.
