May Valley and Duff elementary schools came out on top, during district elementary academic comptition over the weekend.


May Valley was the winner of the District 132 comptition, while Duff took home top prize in District 133. Both schools also earned top awards in quick recall and future problem-solving.


“Congratulations to May Valley Elementary and Duff Elementary for placing first overall in their districts, in future problem solving and in quick recall and all of our students who excelled in this competition,” Supt. Henry Webb said in a statement released by Floyd County Schools. “The board team and I wish you the best of luck in regional competition.


“We’d also like to especially congratulate Betsy Layne Elementary and McDowell Elementary students for winning the Hume Sportsmanship award, as we highly value the qualities of good sportsmanship.”


The top five students in each event and the top two future problem solving and quick recall teams advance to regional competition, which is the highest level of competition for elementary students.


The regional competition will be held at Emmalena Elementary, in Knott County. Future problem solving and composition will compete Tuesday, March 18, while the written assessments, quick recall matches and awards ceremony will be on Saturday, March 22.
