Garbage piles up as collector struggles

PRESTONSBURG — Something hasn’t smelled right in Floyd County during the last several weeks, and residents say the root of it is garbage which has not been picked up.

Earnestine Ward says she has been four weeks now without a garbage pickup, and every time she calls the company to get answers, all she gets is more false promises.

“Either we get excuses, or they’re mad that you called,” says Ward.

Ward says that at one point, the company wouldn’t even answer her phone call for three days. “We can’t get our garbage picked up, and we still have to pay a rich bill every month.”

Ward, who lives in the Dinwood community of Floyd County, says she has even gone to the office of Waste Connections a number of times, and each time she is told that someone will be out to pick up her trash.

Martin city officials say that their phones have not stopped ringing with people trying to figure out why their garbage is not being picked up.

Floyd County Judge Executive R.D. “Doc” Marshall met with officials from Waste Connections on Wednesday, and officials from his office say the company indicates it will be back on schedule soon.

A recent pickup schedule change, as well as a reduction of staff, has been blamed for why the garbage has not been picked up.

But for folks like Earnestine Wood, four weeks is too long, no matter what kind of problems they are having. “People here in Dinwood’s garbage is running over,” says Wood.

For now, Waste Connection’s corporate office is advising that anyone still having issues with garbage pickup should contact them at (866) 428-4208.
