TOWN BRANCH — A Prestonsburg police officer was involved in an accident Wednesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality — that of a groundhog.

Sgt. Brian Walker was traveling along Town Branch Road, near U.S. 23, when he rounded a curve and found the groundhog in the middle of the road. Walker swerved in an attempt to avoid the creature, only to make matters worse.

Not only did the groundhog perish anyway, Walker’s cruiser ended up stuck in a ditch, which offered little traction, thanks to the week’s heavy rains.

Chief Mike Ormerod said Walker sustained only minor injuries, including a sore shoulder.
