PRESTONSBURG — For the 14th year in a row, the Prestonsburg Police Department is taking it upon itself to help make the holidays a little brighter for children in Eastern Kentucky.
Shop with a Cop will officially get underway at the Mountain Arts Center on Saturday, Dec. 14, with an estimated 40 children participating.
Over the last 14 years, Prestonsburg Police Department has made Christmas possible for numerous children in Floyd County, with more residents and businesses opening their hearts to help make a difference.
“Some of these kids are grown, we’ve been doing this so long,”said Adam Dixon. “We see them out and they thank us, and it’s just a real good feeling.”
Through donations and fundraisers, the department purchases items such as shoes, coats, clothing, personal hygiene items and toys to kids in kindergarten to fifth grade. Each elementary school in Floyd County has two children selected to participate by the Family Resource Center.
According to Dixon, in addition, another child is chosen by Prestonsburg Elementary School for the program, as part of the Rusty Chaffins Memorial, which is sponsored by the Prestonsburg Fire Department.
Kids are also treated to a $150 shopping spree at Walmart where they can buy Christmas presents for themselves or their families.
The event also provides a real morale boost to the police and fire departments.
“We deal with so much ugly stuff throughout the year,” said Assistant Chief Brian Hall. “This is just a great event to let us end the year on a positive note. It’s great for the cops.”
The department is still accepting donations of money to support Shop with a Cop, or new toys to be given out during the event. Items and donations can be brought to City Hall.
