PRESTONSBURG — Following a brief hiatus due to the Thanksgiving holiday, election filings began to trickle in again Monday, as one county official got his first challenge, while a race for another county office became even more crowded.

Coroner Greg Nelson’s bid for another term in office will not go unchallenged, as a business rival has signed on as a political rival as well. Jordon Case, of Dana, a funeral director at Hall Funeral Service, filed paperwork Monday challenging Nelson for the Democratic nomination for coroner. Nelson is funeral director at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home.

Meanwhile, another filing in the jailer’s race has made that office the most crowded race on the ballot. Stuart “Bear” Halbert, of Martin, became the latest entry in that race, which also includes incumbent appointee Cheyenne McKinney, of Allen, and challengers Dale Johnson, of Prestonsburg, Lowell “Dougie” Marcum, of Allen, Lowell Samons Jr., of Banner, and Stan Lee, of Martin.

The only other addition to next May’s ballot was Gurley Norman, of Owensboro, who joined Louisville businessman Matt Bevin as the only two Republicans to file to run against U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell next year.

Candidates have until Jan. 28 to file for next year’s election.

Those filing to run as of 3 a.m., Monday, include:
