Although it is still 10 months away, the race for Prestonsburg mayor has begun in earnest, as a challenger to incumbent Mayor Jerry Fannin filed candidacy papers this week.


City Councilman Lloyd “Les” Stapleton, of Prestonsburg, entered the race Tuesday. Fannin filed for re-election back in November.


Also filing this week, U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers, who will be seeking his 18th consecutive term serving Kentucky’s Fifth District.


The race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate grew to four candidates this week, with the addition of Gregory Brent Leichty, of Loiusville. Leichty will face Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, of Lexington, Tom Recktenwald, of Louisville, and Burrel Charles Farnsley, of Louisville.


Candidates for offices on the May ballot have until Jan. 28 to file. City and school board candidates have until Aug. 12.
