MARTIN — Members of the Martin City Council discussed two critical appointments at a special meeting on Friday as they seek both a new council member and a new auditor.
Following the death last month of Dr. Mahendra R. Varia, a retired veterinarian, the city council has had a vacant seat, but more importantly, what Martin Mayor Samuel Howell called “big shoes to fill.” Dr. Varia is well-remembered in the community for his generosity and philanthropy.
Mayor Howell said he had followed up on several recommended candidates, all of whom had reported that they would be too busy to make a significant contribution to the council. Howell reported that he had contacted area contractor Gary Akers, who had expressed interest, and, following councilman James Reynolds’ nomination, the council voted unanimously to approve the decision.
The city is also looking for a new auditor. The council agreed to prioritize hiring a local, qualified candidate, and voted to ask Darrell Madden, a CPA with an office in Hindman, to come on board.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Martin City Council is set for Thursday, March 27.
