Interested in learning more about charitable giving? How do you get started growing philanthropy in your community? Do you know you can increase your giving power with the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit?

The Appalachian Rural Development Philanthropy Initiative (ARDPI) will answer these questions and more at a free regional training conference on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at The Center for Rural Development (2292 South U.S. 27 at Traffic Light 15) in Somerset.

Tony Watkins, chief executive officer of Community Foundation of West Kentucky Inc., will share his expert knowledge on charitable giving and keys to success in growing local philanthropy.

The conference, entitled “Building a Local Legacy: The Role of Philanthropy in Your Community,” will focus on how local communities can encourage and grow philanthropy in Kentucky for future generations.

“Rural Kentucky currently has an unprecedented opportunity to transform its local communities simply by harnessing a small portion of the intergenerational transfer of wealth,” said Watkins. “In the majority of Kentucky’s 120 counties, the peak years for wealth transfer are happening now or over the next 10 years. It is time to encourage charitable investments that will remain within respective communities while the window of opportunity is open.”

Watkins has been a fundraising consultant for nonprofit organizations since 1983, raising more than $400 million for clients in education and healthcare fields, social service agencies, and hundreds of local congregations.

As part of the conference, participants will get to hear success stories from communities that have experienced local philanthropy growth. The training will conclude with break-out sessions on such topics as Community Foundation 101, Transfer of Wealth and how to talk about it in your community, and Endow Kentucky Tax Credit.
