This week saw your best bet for entertainment being the films that didn’t receive a wide release.

“White House Down” — This will go down as the year that the government couldn’t get its act together, while Hollywood tried making it the center of two action movies. “Olympus Has Fallen” preceded this film and both are pretty dumb. Here, you have Jamie Foxx as an action-oriented president who can handle a bazooka. You also have Channing Tatum as a cop who doesn’t get the job of protecting the Commander in Chief, but fate gives him a second chance when terrorists attack the White House while he and his daughter are there on a tour. About as bad as it sounds.

“Lovelace” — Amanda Seyfried stars in this biography of the actress who starred in ”Deep Throat.” The story finds Linda Lovelace hooking up with a wheeler-dealer husband who winds up forcing her into the adult film industry. Lots of melodrama ensues and it doesn’t jibe with other histories, but the film is fun in a Jackie Collins melodrama sort of way. The actors give it their all, with James Franco showing up as Hugh Hefner, while Peter Saarsgard does a smarmy job as the seedy husband.

“Parkland” — This historical drama was produced by Tom Hanks and centers on that fateful day in Dallas when JFK was shot. A seasoned cast helps tell the story of decisions made after the shooting when Kennedy was taken to the titular hospital. The fine cast includes Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton and Marcia Gae Harden.

Television programs came to the rescue this week with “Mad Men, Season 6” and the first season of “Under the Dome” hitting the shelves. New York fans were happy to see the complete series of “The Naked City” and “Seinfeld” released in boxed sets in time for the holidays.
