PRESTONSBRUG - It’s almost bell time for the Prestonsburg Blackcats. On Friday night, Prestonsburg will host longtime rival Pikeville on Military Appreciation Night to open the 2013 football season. The Blackcats, under the direction of veteran head coach John DeRossett, will enter the 2013 campaign as the favorite in Class 2A, District 8.

DeRossett is impressed with the 2013 edition of the Pikeville Panthers.

“This is probably the best Pikeville team that I’ve seen in 10 or 15 years - they’re loaded at every position,” DeRossett said. “We were able to watch them play Perry Central and I think they’ll be able to make a run for the Class A state title.”

Pikeville is the perennial favorite in Class 2A, District 8. This season, Pikeville is poised to welcome back its leading offensive and defensive players.

Senior running back/defensive back Chase Hall is back to lead the Panthers. Hall rushed 177 times for 1,519 yards and 21 touchdowns last season.

Junior quarterback Austin Charles is also back for the Panthers. As a sophomore, Charles completed 133 passes for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Pikeville quarterback also rushed for 379 yards, scoring four touchdowns via the ground.

Juniors Ben Maynard (426 rushing yards) and Cody Estep (752 receiving yards) are also back for the Panthers.

Defensively, Pikeville returns its top two tacklers from last season, both of whom registered over 70 tackles. Senior Austin Black (DB) and sophomore Daric Pugh (DL) are back to pace the Pikeville defense.

The Panthers finished runner-up in the region last season.

DeRossett and the entire Prestonsburg football program are excited to host familiar foe Pikeville on Military Appreciation Night.

“We always want to do our part to honor the military and give thanks,” DeRossett said. “We’ll be wearing camouflage uniforms in the game and sell those afterwards. Then, we’ll donate the money from the sale of the uniforms to the Wounded Warrior Project. We’ll be recognizing all military as well. It’s just a small way to say thanks and honor our military.”

Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Pikeville football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
