FRANKFORT - A course on hunting white-tailed deer as a sustainable source of locally grown meat is being offered at three locations in the Louisville area in September and October. The course will cover basics of deer hunting and meat processing.

Pre-registration is required, and cost is $20. The course will be limited to those ages 16 and above. The deadline to register is Sept. 3.

“The first introduction to deer hunting course we held last year filled up quickly. We expect a good response again this year,” said Wildlife Biologist Jason Nally, organizer of the course for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Hunting for food is gaining popularity nationwide, according to recent studies. Game animals such as deer provide free range, organic meat free of additives or preservatives. These qualities are increasingly desired by people who want to be more environmentally conscious with their diets as well as their wallets.

Classroom and field portions will be held on separate days. Participants may choose one of three locations to take the classroom portion:

- Thursday, Sept. 5, Louisville Nature Center, 3745 Illinois Avenue, Louisville, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

- Thursday, Sept. 19, Horine Conference Center at Jefferson Memorial Forest, 12408 Holsclaw Hill Road, Louisville, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

- Thursday, Sept. 26, PNC Achievement Center in the Beckley Creek Park section of The Parklands of Floyds Fork, 1310 South Beckley Station Road, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The field portion for all course participants will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, 850 Otter Creek Road, in Meade County.

“We’ll cover what new hunters need to know, such as deer biology and behavior, picking the right equipment, making ethical shots and caring for the meat,” said Nally. “We’ll also discuss legal requirements for deer hunting, and finding a place to hunt.”
