MANCHESTER - The Prestonsburg Blackcats fell short of notching their second win in the 2013 season on Friday night. Knox Central managed to edge Prestonsburg in the Appalachian Bowl at Clay County, defeating the Blackcats 28-27.


Prestonsburg battled from a 14-point deficit from the first half against Knox Central. A missed extra point by the Blackcats in the fourth quarter, however, allowed Knox Central to claim the one-point win.


With the win, Knox Central improved to 3-0.


Following the loss, Prestonsburg dropped to 1-2.


Knox Central led 21-7 at halftime. Not to be outdone, Prestonsburg fought back to tie the contest 21-21.


Prestonsburg defender Chatlin Jarrell picked off a pass from Knox Central quarterback Matt Barger at the 20-yard line and returned it 80 yards for a score with 5:12 left in the third quarter. Following a Tate Green PAT kick, Prestonsburg faced a 21-14 deficit.


Junior quarterback Jarredd Jarrell allowed Prestonsbuirg to pull when he scored on an eight-yard run with 10:30 remaining in the game.


Then Knox Central moved back out in front. The Panthers regained the lead for good when Jared Hall scored on an eight-yard TD run with 8:03 remaining. After a Jacob Tate-kicked PAT, Knox Central led 28-21.


Jackson Reed returned a fumble five yards for a touchdown to get Prestonsburg within one point with just under six remains left. The Blackcats were left facing a one-point deficit after the PAT kick failed.


Barger ran six yards in the opening quarter to push Knox Central out ahead 6-0 with 2:16 left. Knox Central’s kick attempt following the game’s first touchdown failed.


Prestonsburg owned its only lead in the bowl game when Jarredd Jarrell scored on a four-yard scamper with 7:13 left before halftime. Green connected on the PAT kick to put the Blackcats ahead 7-6.


Knox Central retook the lead when Barger scored on a one-yard run and Jonathan Gist added the conversion run with 3:49 to go before intermission.


Before halftime, Hall hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Barger to push the Panthers up 21-7.


Prestonsburg (1-2) will visit Powell County (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 13. Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Powell County football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
