ELIZABETHTOWN - The FC Kentucky U12 girls’ select soccer team traveled to Elizabethtown to compete in the “Beat the Heat” Soccer Tournament earlier in the month. The girls came away with the tournament championship. The squad turned in an outstanding performance, scoring 14 goals and only giving up two goals.


FC Kentucky 2, Atletico (Elizabethtown Club) 2: In the first contest, FC Kentucky faced Atletico (Elizabethtown Club). FC got off to a good first half start with Sarah Lycans scoring the first goal off an assist from Beth Burchett and Makayla Ousley scoring the second goal off an assist from Burchett. The goalkeeper Hope Auxier had two saves in the half for FC Kentucky. In the second half, FC Kentucky failed to score as Atletico scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of the match and the final goal with only 45 seconds left in the match to set the final score at 2-2. Auxier had five saves in the half.


FC Kentucky 4, SCSA (Indiana Soccer Club Team 2) : FC Kentucky faced SCSA (Indiana Soccer Club Team 2) in the second match. The Kentucky team got off to a good start, scoring four goals in the first half. Beth Burchett scored two goals (one off of assist from Sarah Lycans), Lycans scored one goal (off an assist from Grace Trusty) and Grace Trusty scored one goal to set the half time score at 4-0. Auxier had 6 saves in the first half. In the second half, neither team was able to find the net to set the final at 4-0. Auxier had eight saves in the second half.


FC Kentucky 4, DCR (Louisville Soccer Club): The final match of pool play had FCKY facing DCR (Louisville Soccer Club). Due to the tie in the first match against Atletico, FC Kentucky went in this match having to score at least three goals and holding DCR to no goals to have a chance to advance to the championship. In the first half, FC Kentucky got a goal from Sarah Lycans (off an assist from Lauren Johnson) and one goal from Hayleah Fletcher (off an assist from Beth Burchett) to set the half score at 2-0. Auxier had two saves in the half. In the second half FC Kentucky was able to find the net twice with Beth Burchett getting a goal and Sarah Lycans adding her second goal of the match. This gave FC Kentucky a 4-0 win. Hope Auxier recorded two saves in the second half.


This set up a penalty kick shootout between FC Kentucky and Atletico to determine who advanced to play in the championship match.


Penalty kick shootout: FC Kentucky had to put five players out first and were able to get three goals out of the first five. Getting goals were Beth Burchett, Makayla Ousley and Sarah Lycans. Hope Auxier was able to stop two of Atletico’s goals to make it a 3-3 tie. A second five was picked by both teams to go to sudden death. Atletico went first and Hope Auxier got the stop and Lauren Johnson was able to find the back of the net for FC KY to send FC Kentucky to the championship match with a 4-3 win in penalty kicks.


FC Kentucky 4, SCSA (Indiana Soccer Club Team): In the championship match, FC Kentucky played SCSA (Indiana Soccer Club Team 1). FC Kentucky got off to a great start in the first half scoring four goals. Beth Burchett had two goals (one off an assist from Sarah Lycans and the second off an assist from Grace Trusty), Sarah Lycans added a goal and Grace Trusty had a goal to set the half time score at 4-0. Hope Auxier had six saves in the first half. The second half was a defensive battle with neither team being able to score setting the final at 4-0. Auxier had eight saves in the second half.


The FC Kentucky Girls’ defense only gave up two goals in four games. The defense was led by Hope Auxier, Jillian Kidd, Katie Moore, Konstance McCarty, Cleo Wells and Brittany Music.


Floyd County Connection: FC Kentucky is competing in the premiere division (highest division) of the Kentucky Select Soccer League this fall. Players from Floyd County on the team are Beth Burchett (Adams Middle School), Jillian Kidd (Adams Middle School), Katie Moore (McDowell Elementary School), Makayla Ousley (Adams Middle School) and Grace Trusty (Adams Middle School).
