PIKEVILLE – It was a tale of two halves for the University of Pikeville women’s soccer team on Wednesday as it struggled on offense for the first 45 minutes before putting away Bluefield (Va.) with three second-half goals for a 3-0 win at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.

Kayla Scott struck first in the 63rd minute for what would hold on as the game winner, followed by a Makayla Mendoza goal in the 73rd and Carmen Koster closing out the scoring in the 84th.

Chelsea Schulte played a huge role in the win in goal, stopping 10 Bluefield shots for a 90 minute clean sheet. Ram keeper Kayla Richardson went the distance as well with three saves.

The Rams outshot UPIKE 17-9, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Fouls also went in favor of the Rams 7-4, as did corner kicks 3-1.

Luckily for Pikeville, it was able to get a lot more done offensively with a lot less opportunities.

Scott collected a cross from Olivia Gipson inside the center of the penalty box to issue the first score, while Chelsee Carlos played a perfect through ball into Mendoza to put the Bears up 2-0. Mendoza returned the favor with an assist of her own to Koster for a strike just outside the box in the final six minutes.

UPIKE improves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in MSC play, while the Rams drop to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The Bears will be back on the field at 6 p.m. on Saturday against Bluffton (Ohio) at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.
