WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Morehead State University women’s golf team won the nine-team William & Mary Invitational after firing a 296 in the third-and-final round on Tuesday at Plantation Golf Course.
The Eagles (881) finished 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Elon (898) in the 54-hole event. Host William & Mary (903) finished third and Richmond (907) fourth.
“A victory is always special, and I am extremely proud of our team,” MSU Coach Stephanie Barker said. “They all handled the challenges of this course well and really had a great mindset.”
MSU sophomore Anna Appert Lund, freshman Anna Magnusson and sophomore Linnea Scholin all posted 73s on the final day. Sophomore Katie Rice added a 77 and junior Vanessa Bognot rounded out the Eagles’ top-five with an 80. Senior Amalie Schott Munck carded a 77 as an individual.
Appert Lund (216) finished second for the second straight tournament. She was just one stroke behind tournament champion Sunna Vidisdottir (215) from Elon. Magnusson (219), who tied for fourth, and Scholin (220), who earned a share of sixth, also finished in the top-10 out of 51 golfers.
The 54-hole scores for Appert Lund and Scholin were both career lows.
Morehead State’s team score of 29-over-par was its best since shooting 20-over-par at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational in March of 2012.
“There were a countless number of spectators and other competitors who complimented our team the past three days,” Barker added. “Everyone had nice things to say about how our team plays the game, represents themselves and how passionate they are towards the sport. As a coach, that was extra special to see.”
The course played at a par of 71 and yardage of 5,958.
The Eagles will will return to competition Sept. 23-25 when they travel to the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo.
