PIKEVILLE – Alex Phillips and Betsy Schramm finished with nine kills each to lift Rio Grande (Ohio) over the University of Pikeville volleyball team 3-0 on Monday at the UPIKE Gym.
The win breaks up a tie for eighth place in the Mid-South Conference standings as the RedStorm improve to 9-13 overall and 3-9 in the MSC, while UPIKE drops to 13-14 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Rio Grande posted a .245 hitting percentage for the match, compared to -.057 for the Bears. Sydney Hall led Pikeville with eight kills, while Sydney Morris dished out 11 assists and Dominique Melvin posted a match-high 19 digs.
Phillips and Schramm did the bulk of the damage for the RedStorm, but Autumn Snider also made her presence felt with eight kills on just 10 swings with one error for a match-best .700 hitting mark.
Kayla Briley tallied 27 assists, Nicole Ogg had 10 digs and Snider sent back four blocks for Rio Grande.
The RedStorm squandered a 7-2 lead in the first set, allowing the Bears to take a 12-11 after a 10-4 run finished off by a ball handling error by Kayla Briley. The lead was short lived as Rio Grande regained a 13-12 lead on an ace by Chandler Brown that it never lost.
An error by Brown made it a 21-20 RedStorm lead late in the first set, but the next four points went to the RedStorm for a 25-20 win.
The second and third sets weren’t nearly as competitive as Rio Grande built a 17-point lead in the second and 12-point advantage in the third on its way to 25-12 and 25-13 wins.
UPIKE’s next match is at home as well. The Bears will host Shawnee State (Ohio) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
