BARDSTOWN – The University of Pikeville men’s golf team put together back-to-back days of solid play to finish second at the St. Catharine Invitational on Tuesday at the Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
On a day with gusting winds and tough pin placements, the Bears held strong, finishing with a two-day total of 624 (315-309). Cumberland (Tenn.) was just 14 strokes better, capturing the team championship with a 610 (312-298), while Campbellsville (Ky.) was third with 626 (315-311) strokes.
Pikeville’s Timmy Miller earned a spot on the all-tournament team with a third-place finish after carding a 148 (73-75). Will Boyd joined him in the top 10 tied for eighth with a score of 155 (83-72).
After Boyd, the Bears dropped off to a pair of teammates tied for 35th place in Casey Castle with a 167 (92-75) and Samuel McGuire shooting 167 (78-89). Castle had the biggest day two improvement in the field, taking 17 strokes off his first-round total.
Ryan Botts of Cumberland took the individual title with a 145 (72-73), three strokes in front of UPIKE’s Miller.
The 309 by Pikeville is the second lowest round of the fall, with the 302 tallied at the MSC Fall Tournament in Georgetown, Ky., as the only better score.
The St. Catharine Invitational marks the end of the fall season for Pikeville which will return to play in early March of 2014.
