PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville was named a Champions of Character Five-Star Institution, officials from the NAIA announced on Monday.
National-office staff and the NAIA Character Advisory Committee select the five-star institutions based off their work done on campus and in the community.
Examples from the Bears this semester include volleyball raising awareness for breast-cancer research with its ‘Dig Pink’ promotion, members of the women’s basketball team speaking at a local church and baseball donating blood to the American Red Cross as a team.
As a result of the commitment shown by UPIKE and the other recipients, the Champions of Character program continues to grow and impact people throughout the nation. The initiative helps create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition.
The NAIA has historically pushed that atmosphere with core values, including integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
