PRESTONSBURG - After battling back from an early two-touchdown deficit to lead at both halftime and the conclusion of the third quarter, host Prestonsburg gave up a late touchdown to Somerset as the Briar Jumpers won 28-21 in the Class 2A, Region 4 championship game at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Friday night.


Following the loss, Prestonsburg ended its season 7-6.


Somerset, the number three seed out of Class 2A, District 7, improved to 8-4 and advanced to meet Northern Kentucky powerhouse Newport Central Catholic in the state semifinals.


Somerset scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added two more scores in the final period en route to the win.


The visiting Briar Jumpers led 14-0 in the second quarter when Prestonsburg answered with three straight touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.


After a scoreless third quarter, Somerset battled back to tie the regional championship game.


Will Lange hauled in an 84-yard touchdown pass from Castle Hatcher with 2:01 remaining in regulation to give Somerset the game-winning score.


Hatcher completed 10 of 19 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns.


The Somerset quarterback also rushed seven times for 27 yards and one score.


Lange led Somerset in receiving with four pass receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns.


The productive Lange also rushed 14 times for 60 yards.


Bryson Jones led Somerset on the ground. Jones took eight carries for 21 yards and one touchdown for the Jumpers.


Cam Cheuvront caught two pass receptions, both of which went for touchdowns.


Prestonsburg quarterback Jarredd Jarrell completed nine of 18 passes for 98 yards and one touchdown. Jarrell also rushed 28 times for 93 yards.


Dalton Frasure aided the Prestonsburg offense with 17 carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Frasure also hauled in two pass receptions for 13 yards and one care.


Chatlin Jarrell and Chase Ousley each had three catches for Prestonsburg in the season-ending loss.


Brennan Goble and Sean White led the Prestonsburg defense with 15 tackles apiece. Ousley registered 11 tackles and Seth Marcum added 10 stops for the Blackcats.


Another key Prestonsburg defender, Kyle Wallace, recorded eight tackles.


Prestonsburg will return the majority of its starters for the 2014 season.
