PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne is playing in its second holiday tournament in as many weeks. After finishing fifth in the Raceland Derby Classic last week, Betsy Layne is now playing in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament (PIT). The Bobcats were facing Morgan County on Thursday evening but the game ended too late to make this edition.

In addition to Betsy Layne, Morgan County and host Pikeville, this year’s PIT also features June Buchanan, Letcher County Central, North Laurel, Paintsville and Phelps.

After opening the season 6-0, Betsy Layne suffered its first loss in the Raceland Derby Classic. Campbell County edged the Bobcats 75-73 in triple overtime in the opening round of the Raceland-hosted tournament.

Betsy Layne posted wins over Fairview and 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe South Floyd during the Derby Classic.

Defending 58th District champion Betsy Layne pulled away to defeat South Floyd 72-51 in the fifth-place game of the Raceland tournament.

In addition to Fairview and South Floyd, Junior Newsome-coached Betsy Layne has notched wins over Phelps, Piarist School, Magoffin County, Prestonsburg, Male and East Ridge.

The PIT is scheduled to conclude Saturday.

Betsy Layne is slated to host Pikeville on Jan. 6, just one day before facing Piarist in the first round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic at the East Kentucky Expo Center in downtown Pikeville.
