HI HAT - South Floyd posted its second straight win on Tuesday night, edging visiting 15th Region rival Magoffin County 63-62 at Raider Arena.
With the win, South Floyd improved to 5-9.
Magoffin County dropped its third straight game, slipping to 9-7 as a result of the loss.
The Raiders, under the direction of second-year head coach Justin Holbrook, outscored Magoffin County 13-11 in the final quarter to claim the non-district win.
Austin Bailey paced South Floyd with 20 points. Michael Martin netted 14 points and JR Tackett tossed in 12 for the Raiders.
The two familiar 15th Region foes swapped leads throughout the contest. After the first quarter concluded tied 20-20, South Floyd outscored Magoffin County 18-14 in the second quarter to lead 38-34 at halftime.
But Magoffin County didn’t go away. Ranked 10th in the preseason 15th Region boys’ basketball team rankings, Magoffin County outscored South Floyd 17-12 in the third quarter to move back out in front.
Turning in one of its best single-quarter defensive performances of the season, South Floyd held Magoffin County under a dozen points in the final period to notch the win.
Magoffin County also featured three scorers in double figures. Jeffery Bolen led Magoffin County with a game-high 23 points. Following closely behind, Trenton Russell tossed in 22 points for the Hornets. Cory Pitts, who was ranked second in the preseason regional player rankings, added 14 points for the Hornets.
The South Floyd and Magoffin County boys’ basketball teams are not due to meet again this season.
