PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne suffered a season-ending loss on Saturday, falling to 57th District runner-up Lawrence County in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. Lawrence County shot 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field, defeating 58th District champion Betsy Layne 71-52.


Five Bulldogs, all starters, reached double figures in the scoring column as part of a balanced offensive effort. Sophomore guard Brandon Richardson led Lawrence County with a game-high 21 points. Austin Chaffins and Grant Kiser scored 13 points apiece, Robert Dalton netted 12 and Timmy Dalton tossed in 120 for Lawrence County in the convincing victory.


After carrying a hard-fought 23-22 lead into halftime, Lawrence County erupted in the second half. The Bobcats outscored Lawrence County 30-11 in the third quarter.


Struggling offensively, Betsy Layne was limited to 29.2 percent shooting (14-of-48).


The Bobcats shot 568.8 percent (22-of-32) from the foul line.


Peyton Case led Betsy Layne with 17 points. Case was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures in the setback.


Dalton Meade netted eight points and Zach Hamilton chipped in seven for the Bobcats.


Dalton Maldonado scored six points and Andrew Tackett and Dylan Hamilton added five apiece for Betsy Layne in the win.


Dylan Meade, still hobbled from an injury he suffered prior to the 58th District Tournament, played eight-plus minutes out of a reserve role and added three points for the Bobcats.
