BARDSTOWN - With one round out of the way in the 2014 Mid-South Conference Golf Championships, the University of Pikeville was in fourth place on the women’s side and fifth among the men on Monday at the Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
Conference tournament play resumed on Tuesday morning. There were nine teams competing for the men’s championship and seven for the women. Final results from the tournament were unavailable at press time.
The UPIKE women carded 321 total strokes to finish four behind third-place Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) with 317. Cumberlands (Ky.) led the field with a 304, followed by Campbellsville (Ky.) in second with a score of 311.
Pikeville fired a 308 in the first round of the men’s championship, which was just two strokes behind fourth-place Campbellsville (Ky.). The early top three included Lindsey Wilson (289), Cumberlands (292) and Cumberland (Tenn.) 294.
Brittany Brophy and Katy Humphrey were tied for the lead among UPIKE golfers, finishing tied for 10th overall with seven-over par 79s. Ashley Veach was next in line alone in 14th place with an 80 on her scoresheet. The 321 was the best score of the season for the Bears, topping the next best round by eight strokes.
Cumberlands’ Taylor Gillis was the clubhouse leader with an even 72, followed by Campbellsville’s Cassidy Scantland in second with a score of 73.
The UPIKE men had a pair tie for 15th place overall with Kelly Porter and Cody Walker both firing 76s. Bradley Litzinger and Samuel McGuire were a few places behind in 21st place with 77s. Cumberland’s Ryan Botts was out in front after 18 holes with a 68 and Lindsey Wilson’s Chris Butler joined him in the 60’s with a 69 to finish second.
