ST. CATHARINE - Matt Taylor has spent two separate tenures as assistant basketball coach at the University of Pikeville. In between those stints he was an assistant at St. Catharine College. Now, Taylor will even the score with a return to St. Catharine.

But for the first time since his graduation from Alice Lloyd College, Taylor will now be the head coach of a college basketball program. That became a reality late last week when Taylor was introduced to lead the Patriots. He will replace J.T. Burton who was 95-80 in six years at St. Catharine.

“Coach Taylor has been in the NAIA in a number of different roles and under different coaches over the last eight years and it is that experience that set him apart from many of the applicants,” said St. Catharine President William D. Huston. “Of course he is also familiar with St. Catharine and we welcome him back.”

Taylor will inherit a team that finished 20-13 last season and advanced to the national quarterfinals at the NAIA National Tournament.

“We feel very fortunate to have Coach Taylor to lead our basketball program,” said St. Catharine College Director of Athletics Tom Bystrek. “He is known nationally for being an excellent recruiter in addition to his skills on the court.”

St. Catharine competes with Pikeville, Georgetown, Cumberlands, Rio Grande, Campbellsville, Bluefield, Lindsey Wilson, Cumberland and Shawnee State in the Mid-South Conference (MSC).
