MOREHEAD - On June 29, the Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its fifth tournament of the 2014 season on Cave Run Lake. A total of 25 anglers competed in the event. In the end, veteran angler Shawn Smith won the Tug Valley Bass Anglers-hosted fishing tournament.


Cave Run Lake was at summer pool with clear to lightly stained water on the entire lake and a water temperature around 80 to 85 degrees.


Weather for the tournament was great with mostly sunny skies, light winds and an air temperature around 85 to 90 degrees.


The fishing was good, with every angler weighing fish. The fish were caught in 5 to 10 feet of water on the main lake as well as in the pockets and creeks.


The main pattern for the tournament was to fish soft plastic baits, worms or crawdad imitations around grass. Finesse fishing with small worms accounted for most of the fish weighed in. The total amount of fish weighed in for the tournament was 89.36 pounds.


The top 10 finishers were as follows: 1 — Shawn Smith (5 fish), 7.96 lbs.; 2 — Brandon Staten (5 fish) 7.03 lbs.; 3rd — MO (5 fish), 5.83 lbs.; 4 — Lacy Edmiston (5 fish) 5.51 lbs.; 5 — Zach Bowman (5 fish), 5.48 lbs.; 6 — Johnny Webb (5 fish), 5.45 lbs.; 7 — Steve Cullop (5 fish), 4.96 lbs.; 8 — Justin Cullop (5 fish), 4.71 lbs.; 9 — Mike Cullop (5 fish), 4.35 lbs.; 10 — Lynn Fields (5 fish), 4.14 lbs..
