EASTERN - Allen Central is one of 11 Kentucky high school teams who have won the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.


Teams who earned the award maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale during the 2013-14 schoolyear.


Allen Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, captured its third straight 15th Region title in 2013. The Rebels compiled a 33-7 record last season. Henry Clay ended Allen Central’s postseason run in 2013, blanking the Rebels 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 26-24) in the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament.


In addition to Allen Central, the following Kentucky high school teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award: Fulton City, Graves County, Henry Clay, Leslie County, Paintsville, Pikeville, Powell County, Pulaski County, Scott and Washington County.


Allen Central competes with Betsy Layne, Piarist School, Prestonsburg and South Floyd in the 58th District.


The Rebels will start their quest for a fourth straight 15th Region championship later in the month.
