Betsy Layne, AC fall in All ‘A’ openers

Phelps eliminated Betsy Layne from the 15th Region All “A” Classic Thursday night at Pikeville, beating the Bobcats 11-3 in the opening round.

Phelps advanced to meet Paintsville, a 20-1 winner over Allen Central in another opening round game. Allen Central, the defending 58th District champion, took a 1-6 record out of last week.

Robert Gannon pitched Phelps past the Bobcats. Head coach Randy Smith is in his first season at the helm of the Phelps baseball program.

Paintsville captured its first 15th Region All “A” Classic, topping host Pikeville 11-5.

Senior Daniel Pugh drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances. Shane Grimm started on the mound, giving way to Travis Ison who pitched in relief.

The Paintsville Tiger Classic is scheduled to get underway Thursday evening. Teams set to join host Paintsville include Allen Central, Perry County Central, Letcher County Central, Morgan County, Butler, Ironton, Ohio and Oak Ridge, Tenn.

  • Prestonsburg went 0-3 in the Queen City Classic last week. Perry County Central, Leslie County and Powell all posted wins over the Blackcats. Prestonsburg (1-7) dropped two of the three games in five innings. Perry County Central beat the Blackcats 13-2 in five innings last Wednesday. Leslie County downed Prestonsburg 10-3 Friday evening and Powell County posted a 12-2 five-inning victory over the Floyd County team Friday evening. Prestonsburg had a fourth game scheduled as part of the tournament, but due to inclement weather, could not get it in.
