The Blackcats beat Magoffin County for their third straight win. The two 15th Region baseball programs met for the first time in the 2011 season.
Prestonsburg improved to 13-7 while Magoffin County carried a 7-14 record out of the late-regular-season contest.
Magoffin Country starting pitcher Austin Whitaker suffered the loss. Whitaker notched six strikeouts in the setback.
The Hornets struggled early on in the non-district meeting. Carter held Magoffin County scoreless through the first four innings.
Following a scoreless first inning, Prestonsburg struck for one run in the bottom half of the second. Carter delivered a double to get the Blackcats going offensively in the second inning. Hunter Brown, serving as a courtesy runner, crossed home plate for Prestonsburg’s first run.
The Blackcats led 1-0 through three innings. Kyle Chaffin connected on a single and Carter reached on an error as Prestonsburg had two more baserunners during its fourth plate appearance. Chaffin and Brown, courtesy running again for Carter, scored as the Blackcats moved ahead 3-0.
Magoffin County produced both of its runs in the fifth inning. Carter was able to get out of the inning without any further damage and held Magoffin County scoreless in the final two frames on his way to the win.
