Blackcats upend Leslie County, claim district title

HYDEN - One year after dropping a district championship game to Leslie County, Prestonsburg enacted some revenge against the Eagles Friday night. Prestonsburg held 2011 Class 2A, District 8 champion Leslie County scoreless in three separate quarters and prevailed in a defensive battle, winning 15-7. With the win, Prestonsburg captured the 2012 Class 2A, District title.

Junior Grant Anderson led the Prestonsburg offense. Anderson rushed 19 times for 105 yards. The Prestonsburg junior also hauled in five receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore quarterback Jarredd Jarrell completed 13 of 21 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Bryan Williams led Prestonsburg in receiving. Williams reeled in six receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Prestonsburg scored first and never trailed. The Blackcats moved out in front in the opening quarter when Jarrell hooked up with Anderson on a scoring pass. Following a successful extra-point kick from Jon Stidham, Prestonsburg led 7-0.

The Blackcats packed the hard-fought 7-0 lead out of the first quarter.

Leslie County senior quarterback Ethan Horton reached the endzone on a short run in the second quarter. After the extra point made its way through the uprights, Prestonsburg and Leslie County were deadlocked 7-7.

The Prestonsburg defense recorded a safety to put the visiting team ahead 9-7 in the third quarter.

Jarrell hooked up with Williams on a scoring pass in the final quarter to set the final score.

Horton led the Leslie County offense. The experienced Leslie County quarterback completed 15 of 23 passes for 204 yards but didn’t complete a scoring pass. Horton also threw three interceptions.

Prestonsburg (6-3 overall, 3-0 Class 2A, District 8) will host Pike County Central in a regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 26. In a record-setting game on Sept. 14, Prestonsburg defeated Pike County Central 83-49.

Kickoff for the latest Prestonsburg-Pike County Central football game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium.
