Early results mixed for Floyd girls’ teams

FLOYD COUNTY - The Derrick Newsome-coached Allen Central Lady Rebels, following a victory over longtime powerhouse Betsy Layne, own an early lead in the 58th District/Floyd County Conference.

Betsy Layne and Piarist have also appeared in the win column early in the 2012-13 season. Prestonsburg and South Floyd, however, remain winless early in the 2012-13 campaign.

Here’s a closer look at 58th District/Floyd County girls’ basketball teams.

Allen Central (3-0): The Lady Rebels are undefeated through three games. Allen Central boasts wins over Phelps (61-23), Betsy Layne (59-54) and Jackson County (53-40).

The Lady Rebels will entertain South Floyd tonight. Tip-off for the Allen Central-South Floyd girls’ basketball game is set for 6 p.m.

Derrick Newsome is in his first season as head coach of the Allen Central girls’ basketball team.

Betsy Layne (2-1): The Ladycats are 2-1 through their first three games. Betsy Layne defeated Paintsville 39-36 in a season-opener before falling to Allen Central one week ago. The Ladycats, who are coached by first-year head coach Christina Crase, defeated Piarist School 63-32 Tuesday night.

Piarist School (1-2): The Lady Knights after dropped back-to-back games after defeating Red Bird 56-31 in a season-opener. Fairview defeated Piarist 65-47 Saturday.

Following its loss to Betsy Layne on Tuesday, Piarist turned its attention to Allen Central. The Lady Knights will visit 58th District/Floyd County Conference frontrunner Allen Central on Saturday. Kevin Tackett guides the Lady Knights.

Prestonsburg (0-3): The Lady Blackcats are 0-3 after dropping games to Buckhorn (41-67), East Ridge (34-71) and Pikeville (18-69). Prestonsburg will have another opportunity to get into the win column tonight when Betsy Layne visits.

April Newsome is in her first season as head coach of the Prestonsburg girls’ basketball team.

South Floyd (0-4): The Lady Raiders are 0-4 following losses to June Buchanan (35-68), Pike County Central (19-68), Phelps (22-45) and Shelby Valley (30-86).

Veteran head coach Tony Isaac is at the helm of the South Floyd girls’ basketball program.

South Floyd will visit Allen Central for its 2012-13 58th District/Floyd County Conference opener tonight.
