High school basketball coaches with Floyd County ties are present across the state. Two coaches in area districts were celebrating district championship wins over the weekend.
In the 57th District, second-year Sheldon Clark head coach Kevin Spurlock guided the Cardinals to a championship. Sheldon Clark defeated Johnson Central 65-51 in the 57th District Tournament title game.
The Cardinals boast a 15th Region-best 26-6 overall record. Senior guard B.J. Moore and sophomore forward Justin Johnson, two of the 15th Region’s top players, lead Sheldon Clark.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play East Ridge on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in the final opening round game of the 15th Region Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
Spurlock is an Allen Central High School graduate.
In the 56th District, Hall guided much-improved Powell County to the 56th District championship. In the preseason, Powell County was picked to finish third in the 56th District behind Lee County and favorite Estill County. The Pirates defeated border rival Estill County 54-46 in the 56th District championship game.
Powell County improved to 19-12 after defeating Estill County in the district championship game. The Pirates will play Letcher County Central on Wednesday in the opening round of the 14th Region Tournament at Knott County Central.
Hall graduated from McDowell High School.
