No. 14 Shawnee State holds off Bears

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – No. 14 Shawnee State University got a monster day from senior Schera Sampson in a 74-57 win over the University of Pikeville on Saturday afternoon at Waller Gymnasium.

Sampson, a 6-0 forward, finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season.

Shawnee State (22-7 overall, 13-6 in the Mid-South Conference) controlled the glass with a 48-34 edge and won despite shooting 2-of-19 from the arc. It was aided by 22-of-28 (78.6 percent) shooting from the line.

Shawnee had 19 of its 48 rebounds off the offensive glass.

Pikeville (11-18, 6-13) shot 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) for the game, including 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from the arc. The Bears were 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the free throw line.

Junior forward Callisha Johnson fired in 15 points to lead three Bears in double figures. Freshman forward Peyton Wright followed with 10 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Christin Haney scored 10 while pulling down four rebounds and handing out three assists.

Pikeville turned it over only 12 times in the loss. Shawnee State took care of it as well, giving it up only nine times.

Sampson was joined in double figures by junior Alannah Sheets. Coming off the bench because of Senior Day, Sheets was 10-of-11 from the line to finish with 17 points and a dozen rebounds.

Senior Alex Pohl had 15 points and six rebounds.
