PRESTONSBURG — Those who have struggled with drug addiction and those who love them gathered in the twilight Friday night, to bring attention to the challenges faced by a growing number of people.
Communities Against Drug Addiction sponsored the “Hope in the Darkness” event at the Big Sandy Community and Technical College walking track, with support from Pit Stop BBQ and the city of Prestonsburg.
Sam Spears was one of the speakers at the event, and he shared his personal struggles with drug addiction. Spears detailed for the group the lows he reached before he finally found help two years ago.
“I finally got help from two angels, dressed in Kentucky State Police uniforms,” Spears said.
Spears heaped credit for his recovery on groups like CADA and Operation UNITE.
Following music by a group from Paintsville United Methodist Church and a bountiful barbecue dinner, the group released balloons upon which guests had written the names of those who have died due to drug abuse or who have overcome or are still struggling with addiction.
The event ended with a lap in the darkness around the walking track.
